Estonian Association of Architects (EAA) announces this year’s EAA Annual Prize competition

The Estonian Association of Architects (EAA) has announced a competition for the EAA Annual Prize 2016, with a call for nominations up to 30 May. The award winner will be announced at a ceremony gala on 9 December to be held at NO99 Theatre. The awarding of the EAA Annual Prize is supported by AS Merko Ehitus.

“The professional association wants to highlight its members whose works enrich the local spatial culture with fresh ideas and uncompromising architecture. A competition focuses on the importance of details to the big picture – it isn’t size that matters but quality,” said EAA president Katrin Koov.

The EAA Annual Prize is 5,000 euros and it is made possible by support from AS Merko Ehitus.

“The experience from the awarding of the first annual prize was encouraging and we hope for an even more active turnout this year from both candidates and audiences. Good collaboration between customers, builders and architects and taking each other’s interests into consideration is a sine qua non for functional solutions and high-quality architecture. During our 25 years of history, we have had the honour to build a great number of buildings that are convenient for users and add something aesthetically valuable to the environment. We put value on architecture in the case of commissioner work as well as the buildings we develop,” said AS Merko Ehitus management board member Tõnu Toomik.

The EAA Annual Prize aims to recognize, each year, one outstanding work of architecture and the architect responsible for it. Any member of the Estonian Association of Architects can submit entries in the competition, and they will be judged by an architectural expert from outside Estonia. This year, the acclaimed Spanish architect Fuensanta Nieto will be the judge.
