300 MW Eesti power plant of Eesti EnergiaAuvere village, Vaivara, Ida-Virumaa

The prime construction contractor for the power plant was a consortium led by the French company Alstom, under a turnkey construction contract. The power plant complex consists of more than 30 different buildings and infrastructure sites; Merko was involved in the construction of 22 of them. By Estonian standards, this was a very large and international construction project, as companies from close to 20 different European countries were involved in the work and the maximum number of employees approached 1,400 at peak periods. Merko was responsible as subcontractor for general construction, including large-scale earth moving and concrete works (more than 30,000 m3 of concrete), various pile-driving work and assembly of complicated technical systems. Construction of various electrical facilities and a five-storey administrative building was also performed, right down to the finishing work. Merko performed all of the most complicated concrete jobs on the site, the most interesting of which were the pouring of the foundation and subgrade for the turbine. The concrete slab foundation (1,500 m3) and turbine subgrade (1,700 m3) had to be poured concurrently and in both cases the concrete work involved several crews and lasted from the early morning to late night. For such large monolithic concrete structures, special attention had to be devoted to aftercare and the particularities of slab concrete. Another one of the more interesting parts of the project were the cooling and fire fighting water pumping station, and subsequently connecting it to the river, and the construction of the cooling water intake canal that preceded it. The pump station’s 1.2 m thick raft foundation was built 12 m below the earth’s surface, with a piling wall and thin strip of soil separating the footing from the river. The thickness of the walls and ceiling of the pump station is a maximum 1.5 m. The boiler plant’s raft foundation, close to a metre thick and with an area of 5,700 m2, is also worth mentioning.
