Apartment buildings at Vana-Kalamaja 31/ Suur-Laagri 2Vana-Kalamaja 31 / Suur-Laagri 2, Tallinn
Two distinctive-looking three-storey apartment buildings designed by architect Paavo Kais for the Kalamaja neighbourhood were built in autumn 2014. The basement level of the buildings is of slab concrete, the first two storeys are of Columbia stone, and ceilings are of hollow panel. The structures in the third-storey’s external wall are wood. The façade is sided in wood board and decorated with wood reliefs. Both buildings have 6 flats; the basement level also has two commercial tenants and storage spaces. The buildings are situated on the same plot, bounded by a picket fence. The courtyard has room for the apartment owners’ cars, playground and gazebo. The interior design by Eerik Olle and Ahti Peetersoo is dominated by light tones, and based on customer preference, they are complemented by oak parquet floors in different tones. Typically for Kalamaja, the interior and exterior doors are panel doors. The wood windows are white on the outside and coated in white glaze on the inside. The steps are covered with massive limestone pavers.
The apartments are equipped with “smart home” solutions that allow interior climate (ventilation and heating) and lighting to be controlled remotely from a tablet computer.
