Storm water drainage for the Ülemiste crossingTallinn

For the reconstruction of the Ülemiste crossing it was necessary to build an additional structure for storm water drainage. At the same time, the Kadriorg Park had a historical drainage network of ditches and canals, but there was no water in the canals. This project solved these two problems – the Ülemiste crossing got a storm water drainage system and the Kadriorg Park got water into its historical canals. We installed about 1.8 km of pipelines and built about 1.2 km of canals and cascades. The circular canal in the lower garden in front of the Kadriorg Art Museum was reconstructed in its historical location. The canals in the concrete construction were finished with granite stones that were excavated during the construction of the canals. Granite stones have lined the canals of the Kadriorg Park for centuries. These historical stones were revived as part of the concrete construction. We think that this project is a good example of the possibilities of using concrete. In this project concrete constructions were used in heritage conservation for reconstructing historical canals. Even for covering the edges of the canals concrete slabs were preferred to natural stone. The project also included the construction of a reservoir and cascade in a concrete construction, which brings picturesque fl owing water to the Kadriorg Park. The concrete structures were skilfully used to add new dimensions to landscape and history.
