The modern Meriküla waste water treatment plant in Muraste, a residential community in Harku municipality, ensures the households in the growing area with the required level of service. Thanks to the new plant, the water routed into Kakumäe Bay is significantly cleaner and meets the requirements of efflux set forth in the permit for special use of water. In the course of work, the old waste water treatment centre was demolished and a new and more powerful plant was established, capable of treating the waste water from 6,000 people. As a factor making the construction more complicated, the work had to be done in the geologically unfavourable conditions of Muraste nature reserve and that the old plant, which was on the construction lot, had to be kept operating at the same time. The construction was performed by a consortium of AS Merko Ehitus Eesti and AS Merko Infra, and the project was co-financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund.
