The old library of Tallinn University of TechnologyEhitajate tee 5, Tallinn

The buildings of Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) are an architectural monument and protected under heritage conservation, imposing different protection requirements on them. According to the development plan, the old library and the old rectorate rooms in study building No 1 were reconstructed into office rooms for student councils and a student recreation centre, or the so-called Student House. In addition to the recreation centre, also university archives were set up in the basement of the old library. For protection against fi re, a modern gas extinguishing system was installed. Many TUT organizations have found rooms in the Student House. In the course of the reconstruction also day care rooms for children were built. These are meant for preschoolers whose parents want to concentrate on their studies, listen to lectures or pass exams. The reconstruction also took into account the needs of people with mobility disability: the new Student House got an invalift, and wheelchair ramps and handrails. The courtyard between the Student House and study building No 1 got a green area and a patinated copper plate architectural sculpture with a clock mechanism that looks like book arising from the ground, which is actually meant for covering up the cooling machine.
