Merko’s Kaunas Police Building becomes the first A ++ class energy performance administrative building in Lithuania

The head office of the Police Department, built by Merko in Kaunas, is the first A ++ class energy performance administrative building in Lithuania, heated and powered 100% from renewable sources. 350 Kaunas County police officers will work in these modern premises. This is a public-private building, which will be managed by UAB Merko Statyba for the next 12 years.

‟It is a great pleasure to hand over this symbolic key and officially announce that the design and construction, which has taken more than two years, has been completed, so you are welcome to comfortably move in and work successfully in the new building,” Saulius Putrimas, director general of UAB Merko statyba congratulated the Kaunas County police officers. Mindaugas Baršys, the Chief of Police of Kaunas County, noted that one-third of the police officers of Kaunas County, i.e., almost 350 police officers and employees from ten different structural units, will finally get a comfortable job after a wait of several decades. Baršys emphasized that better working conditions for police officers are now guaranteed and that a modern environment will contribute to better customer service. The new building is also fully adapted for people with special needs.

The building with two internal atriums and an external one as well is the first A ++ energy performance class administrative building in Lithuania – almost all the energy required for its operation is obtained from renewable sources. Solar panels with a capacity of more than 300 kW have been installed on the roof of the administrative and warehouse building and the car garage, and the energy generated will be sufficient for the operation of the buildings. In addition, a ground-loop heat pump has been installed for heating and cooling the buildings. The modern heating, cooling and ventilation system creates a high-quality microclimate and ensures a comfortable working environment. The new modern building offers significant savings in operating costs. The control of the technical systems of the buildings is fully automated and connected to the general control system of the building, which allows ventilation and air conditioning, and workplace lighting parameters to be changed automatically.

‟The police officers of Kaunas County won’t have to worry at all about property management, because we will be taking care of it for the next 12 years. The Lithuanian Police are one of the first government agencies to actively and professionally implement public-private partnership projects,” said Putrimas. In addition to the construction of administrative, storage and utility buildings, the PPP cooperation project also included the construction of public car parks. The period of the cooperation agreement is 15 years and UAB Merko Statyba has invested 13.5 million euros into the project.
