Ventspils Music School and Concert Hall “Latvia”

Description of work

Time of completion

Civil engineering
Concrete works

Ventspils Music School and Concert Hall is an extravagant building, and the work included the construction of a four-storey building (including one technical floor) which houses a music school and a 600-seat concert hall.

The building is unique due to various innovative technical solutions which ensure low energy consumption with minimum emissions of greenhouse gases. For example, hundreds of meters long channels were installed for the heating and cooling of air, using earth temperature. A ventilation system was installed where intensity is determined by the CO2 level in the room. Specially designed windows were selected, opening of which switches off the ventilation function. The latest climate and time information systems as well as lighting, blinds and other systems were installed in the building.

Two unique musical instruments were installed in the Large Hall – a manual concert organ and the currently biggest vertical concert piano in the world. An interesting feature of the Small Hall is its transformable wall – opening of this wall allows using the hall as an open-air stage.

The construction works were performed by the consortium of Merks and Ostas Celtnieks.
