The new block replaced the third and fourth blocks of Lithuania Power Plant, constructed in the 7th decade, increased the electricity production capacity, reliability and efficiency of Lithuania Power Plant, and reduced the electricity production cost. The project of Elektrėnai is already the second project employing “9FB” gas turbine technology provided by General Electric in the Baltic States. A similar device was installed in the course of extension of Riga Thermal Power Station-2 which is the largest power station in Latvia. Combined cycle (CC) technology is widely used in the European energy sector. Rigorous EU exhaust pollution standards were particularly advantageous in increasing fuel consumption efficiency in the area of electricity production. Many removed obsolete detrimental and surplus facilities were replaced namely with the fuel saving CC technology (its efficiency makes 50–60 per cent).
