Urban space

Installation “Pesa” (Nest)

The installation Nest, which combines metal and light art, stands on top of a former lighting tower in the Noblessner harbour. Commissioned by Merko, the artwork is designed to liven up the urban space and inspire the appreciation of old and disused industrial objects. Nest is the first part of a potentially larger public urban space design project.

The light installation, inspired by a picture of a stork’s nest drawn by five-year-old Stina, is located on Peetri Street in the Noblessner harbour, on top of a long disused lighting tower. The artwork can be observed both from the Noblessner quarter and when walking along Kalaranna Street. Nest was created by the joint team of the design agency Velvet and the Estonian light design studio UN-LIKE. The branches that give shape to the nest are made from scrap metal from Merko’s construction sites, tinted to resemble the colour of the tower.

When developing living environments, we extend the meaning of a high-quality home to the surrounding urban space as well. We create meaning for a place and shape new landmarks by taking advantage of the on-site possibilities of development areas and honouring their history.
