Sculpture group “Monumental Abandonment”
The Arter quarter, completed in 2024/2025, transformed the entire skyline of Tallinn. And thanks to Arter, Tallinn finally has an “equestrian monument”, something that many have demanded for the public realm in the past. Around the buildings of Arter quarter, developer and owner Kapitel has installed works from “Monumental abandonment”, a sculpture series by Estonian artist Flo Kasearu. The series is dedicated to influential women in Estonian history.
Standing behind the quarter is a life-size bronze equestrian monument of Alma Ostra-Oinas (1886–1960), a politician, journalist and women’s rights activist who was among the first women in Estonia’s parliamentary politics. She played an active role in the formation of the Republic of Estonia and consistently advocated for women’s rights, education and social justice. Her work helped bring women’s perspectives more clearly into Estonia’s public and political life, even though her contribution has often been overlooked in historical memory.
In front of the buildings on the Liivalaia Street side, eight bronze sculptures rest on fieldstone plinths. While heroic equestrian monuments have traditionally been dedicated to men, these smaller-scale figures, arranged along a timeline, honour influential women from different eras – from the Kreenholm textile workers’ strike of 1872 to the present day. They depict Lilli Suburg, Alma Ostra-Oinas, Leida Laius, Marju Lauristin, Eha Komissarov and Anna-Stina Treumund, along with a monument without a named rider – left open for the future.
