The design work of the Aspen Pulp Mill and the entire site at Kunda was started in September, 2004. Merko Ehitus completed the construction work in May, 2005. First the landscape that comprised of 12.5 hectares of wooded country was turned into an operable ground. A warehouse and fences around the facilities and a gravelled ground were erected on the site as well. A bond was dug on the western border of the site and an irrigation system was built for the forest at the northern side of the site. A sea pipe with a diameter of 400 mm that is 10.5 kilometres long takes cleaned sewage to the Gulf of Finland and deposits it at a depth of 14 metres. The greatest challenge was to mount the pipe in the sea. The mill and the point where the pipe starts are 42 metres above sea level, but the pipe ends 14 metres below sea level.
