The Maadevahe asphalt concrete plant on Saaremaa operated from 1959 to 1993. During that time, the plant contaminated the surrounding soil, aquifer and the Maadevahe River on the west bank of which the plant was located. To clean up the pollution, the contaminated soil must be dug up and replaced with uncontaminated soil. A total of 21,000 cubic metres of contaminated soil will be removed from Maadevahe site and handed over to a waste handling company. In addition, infrastructure, concrete residues and refuse in the project area will be eliminated. The riverbed will also be dredged.
