The renovation of the Mustamäe substation was part of a major joint project between Elering and Elektrilevi to satisfy the growing energy needs in the Mustamäe and Õismäe district and increase the reliability of supply.
A new 110 kV Elering substation was built next to the 6 kV Elektrilevi substation already standing on Vilde tee in Tallinn on the turnkey principle. In the course of the work, H-configured 110 kV external switchgear, a new control building and an access road were designed and built for the substation. A building with a lightweight structure was built enclosing the substation equipment, which was a first for Estonia, to make the high-voltage substation better suited to an urban environment. The new Mustamäe district substation supplies electricity to over 15,000 households and institutions, including the North Estonia Medical Centre complex and a number of kindergartens and schools.
The location of the substation in fairly tight confines between residential buildings required exacting precision in the design, construction and execution of the electrical work.
